The Britcar Silverstone 24 Hour Race.

Posted by Kevin McMullin at 05:00 PM on September 24, 2008
Back from Silverstone, where I marshalled at the better than ever Britcar 24 hours. a fantastic race with a very unfortunate fly in the ointment. The cars charge past the union flag at the start, one of them spins, one of them tries to avoid it, but makes contact instead, flies across the track bounces off a wall and comes back into the path of the oncoming pack.

What ensued is far too nasty to be shown, so for those of you who have put it onto YouTube and not pulled it down, or take delight in only going or watching races for the crashes, I hope that you lot realise that you are not helping Andy Neate [the unfortunate TVR driver who broke his neck in the incident] or his wife get over this at all. I only found your videos by track backs from my marshal video [see below]. I would strongly suggest that you remove the offending material and re-consider your interest in motor racing.

It was rather interesting to read on Ten Tenths?that, and I loosely quote "The flag marshal on the outside of Woodcote who was frantically waving double yellow flags helped stop a bigger accident, and should be proud of himself". It's also interesting to read that the marshaling of the incident's direct aftermath was "exemplary" and "prevented the incident from escallating" - according to Motorsport News.?

Frankly, There was only one thing I could have done - yeah, I was flagging on the outside of woodcote, the last but one flag point before the incident - and that was grab the other yellow flag and wave like hell... Proud - slightly, but it's pride in being a marshal. All the Marshals gave everything to sort the situation out quickly and safely. If anyone should be proud then it's the incident marshal who directed the field around the incident and sorted out a stalled car quickly, or the rescue boys who got on the scene quick enough to help out.?

That is all I shall say on the incident. You can read the reports in?Motorsport News?and undoubtedly Autosport as well if you want all the details. If you do want to see the video, wait for the race to be edited by Pitlane Productions, who will no doubt be very professional with their coverage. I would encourage you to ignore the?amateur?attempts on YouTube or anywhere else. And that includes Autocar Magazine's video too.

To happier news from the race. New innovations this year in the world of television, which is always exciting. firstly there was for the first time at the 24 hours, live pictures around the start and first few hours - provided by the crews of Hayfisher. They disappeared in the evening though and did not return. Maybe it was because their boss was out of the race? More interesting was Thorney Motorsport's new innovation, Live In Car Closed Circuit TV, or as their webaddress says -?http://lincc.tv?. This rather special innovation broadcast views from 2 cameras on their car, via an arial on the roof, back to screens not only in their pit, but all around the circuit. Apparently it works on a sort of wifi network and can be?received?by any wifi enabled device. I think I may contact Thorney out of sheer curiosity and find out how it works, not that we'll [that's 4-10 motorsport] be likely to be able to afford it, but it could be the start of a way forward for broadcasting. We shall see.

Also, I spoke to Mr James Tucker, who runs Britcar. He liked the sound of the marshals ad - which is now up to 277 hits - and so I am now creating a higher quality version to send to him, and replace the one I have at the moment. If only I know how to make it better!
