Work In Progress

What happens if you find a year old rushes tape, a bout of boredom, and a forthcoming event, and a worthy cause?

You get random acts of editing...

Not great, but it's only a first go. and only an hour's work too.

Adventures and discoveries.

Tomorrow I head to Cardiff with a bike, a camera (you guessed it, my little DogCam) and Ulrich and voice over master Dave to do some of the oddest pre production re-search imaginable.

I'm not going to tell you what the program is just yet, but tomorrow will involve bikes, boats and trains. and about 15 miles worth of travelling between the 3. All will become very clear too. There's also going to be a couple of new projects from M&W soon for Glam TV. I can't seem to leave this little organisation!?

And best of all, some footage from last year's 24 hour race at Silverstone (yes, the one featuring Top Gear) has turned up in the most unexpected place, so you can watch out for that turning up around here.?

Speaking of Top Gear, whilst doing my usual trick of "send your CV to anywhere and everywhere and hope" I included the TG production office in the list. I didn't get a job, but I now have a signed photo! Amazing thing, serendipity.?

Oh yes, and you can also watch out for a music review article from yours truly on "musical bites" coming up on Sunday.?

A highwayman lives at number 11.

Got the road tax renewal notice on my car today. The theiving gits want ?120 for a year's motoring.

If I was driving a Ferrari I would not be surprised by this, but as I've only got a 1.1 Peugeot 106 it's a bit steep. It's even more annoying when they are giving away a 1.4 [Diesel!!??] Seat Ibiza as a prize. Said 1.4 Seat pays nothing in road tax.

Why? Surely a 1.4 engine, even a diesel one is going to use more fuel than a 1.1 by definition. And it's no good playing the emissions card because I'm sure my little 106 can compete with the rest of 'em on that score. It's just a blatant attack on the young motorist. Again.

I've a good mind not to pay it, out of protest. On the other hand, it would give me great pleasure to win that horrible little car and then shove a great big V12 into it. In front of the minister for environazi tendancies, whom I'm sure is to blame. Or maybe do what Jeremy Clarkson once did to a Perodua Kelisa...

The wonders of youtube.

Posted by Kevin McMullin at 07:05 AM on August 03, 2008 Comments comments (0)
up till now, I've favoured Google Video over Youtube for screening my videos. There's no time or size limit for a start, and it does everything just as well as it's more unconventionally named sibling. Nevertheless I've started using my youtube account a bit more recently, and the results are somewhat interesting.

Firstly, I used it to show a teaser of the kart race I did some time ago for 4-10 - The net result was that the following day traffic to the 4-10 Website (which I also run) was as much as it had been in the previous month.

I've also found that my usual style of production comes a distinct second to something which I've cobbled together in about 10 minutes and thrown at the web. I mean, look at this.

Almost no work at all - Tim Lewis filmed it with my JVC palmcorder, a quick bit of editing (the order of the cars are different on the tape) add the stopwatch (a nifty little applet from Digital Heaven) and the stock 4-10 Titles created for the kart race.

And in a week, it's been watched 92 times. That's more than the Westfield video has had since June, and I think it's probably more than the karting video too, which has been around since April

I say "probably", because Google Videos reporting system is on the blink - again.

Youtube also gives interesting statistics. In July for instance, the 3 videos were watched mostly by 55 to 64 year old women. Which I found rather odd.

Another thing I found interesting was the search strings which have brought people to this site. "Kevin McMullin" seems obvious enough, but if you were hoping to find one of my American Namesakes, sorry. Particularly who ever it was looking for Kevin McMullin Motorsports. I'm pretty sure that's not me despite an obvious penchant for fast cars!?

Anyway. That's it for now. I'm still looking for a job out there somewhere. If anyone knows of a vacancy for camera/sound operator/assistant or practically anything else, please let me know. Or I shall end up working for myself!

Random Updates...

Yes, I've been quiet lately. Don't panic, it's just the effect of a lot of job hunting, and trying to finish various projects.

Firstly, a small team including myself and Ulrich managed to write, film and produce a 2 minute horror film in a day [and a bit for editing]. I hope to have this online very soon - it's called "Help me, Save Me". Most of it is done in one shot, and without the acting talent of Rosemary John [Mildly Messed Up], we'd never have got it done, and Ulrich has worked wonders with the sound and music. I'm also rather pleased with the way the camera work came out. a Dolly makes a great difference when doing long tracking shots!

Secondly, Here's something that I've had for a while now and hadn't done anything with it, so here it is now!?

Hopefully this will become the first bit of a Rear wheel drive/Front wheel drive feature for 4-10 TV. Or it would, if I could afford to get to the next 4-10 Track day at Brands Hatch. Ah well...

I like trucking...

Since my graduation is rapidly approaching, I'm at the moment trying to juggle finishing that documentary, find work experience and with any luck a job somewhere too.

none of this is particularly easy. However when a major news story breaks on your doorstep, and you have access to some fine media equipment, it would be wrong not to film it. So we did.

Me and Ulrich took a Z1 and boom mic down to the welsh assembly on Tuesday to film a protest by some truckers. They want a reduction in fuel duty, and who can blame them? If anyone from outside the UK is reading this. Our fuel is 66% tax. and 2 different kinds of tax too.

Anyway, we got mistaken for members of the press corps, and got a tip off that the trucks were not going to be allowed to get to Cardiff. We hotfooted it down the A4232 to the Cardiff west motorway services on the M4, and amazingly got there well ahead of the trucks. To cut a long story short, we managed to get enough footage to make a report, and with the help of David Malins in the recording studio doing the voice over, we have this...

Well Guess what? No one else liked it either. Irelande Nul Points! Now, who's for Turkey for dinner?

Away from that, I have these latest images from the Documentary I'm making about Rachel Ward. I know it's been a long time since we wrapped filming (over 3 months now) but uni pressures have put paid to an early release. Still, me and Ulrich are cracking on with the production, and hopefully we'll have something resembling video to show soon.

4 Minutes 10 Questions

If you're going to have an interview, make sure that the interviewer knows what he's doing. and that the interviewee has a vauge idea how to answer the question!

?

Oh and coming soon as part of the 4-10 TV project, something large and yellow which likes smoking...

Oh yes, it's more on board meyhem with the Dogcam Bullet camera. Watch this space.

Time for something new

At last! some proper video to put up here. Firstly, once google video stops being wierd on me, I'll have a proper full length version of this...

?
... which is what you get if you try and film, commentate on, and compete in (Unsuccessfully) a kart race. Still, the helmet camera did exactly what it said on the tin, and remained resolutely stuck to my crash hat throughout the race, despite taking some knocks.
?

And finally... have an advert:
?

All of these are going up on the site proper, later.

Bernie Told me not to come...

As?previously?mentioned, I like a bit of motorsport. So apart from the huge shock of hearing about David Leslie's untimely death in the Farnborough plane crash last week, The other major surprise was hearing that the head of the FIA, Max Mosely was caught ... um... with his trousers down. Literally. I'll let my friend Asp take up the story on his blog:?http://asp-bites.blogspot.com/2008/04/spank-gate.html

However, throughout the whole story breaking, the only music I could think of was this little ditty, as performed by someone called Tom Jones, and the Stereophonics, complete with Stuart Cable.
